To become a fashion stylist, teaching and learning should be started at an early age when the child is at the age of understanding instruction well. Also, while awakening their fashion sense, get him/her tutored by fashion industry experts, and make sure to choose age-appropriate clothing and take note of their style.

Introduction

Whether it is your dream to become or you want your children to become sensible fashionistas, this is a great idea. The process needs to be started at an early age so that as they grow up, they are well acquainted with style, trends, differences, traditions, and their connection to fashion.

On that note, in this article, I will be discussing how to be fashion-stylish as a kid, with knowledge of age-appropriate fashion styling, ways to build a fashionable foundation, develop kids’ styles, and many more. Let’s dive in.

How to be a Fashion Stylist as Kid?

How to be a Fashion Stylist as a Kid?

In the evolving fashion world, if you want your children to grow up to have knowledge of fashion and become sensible about style, there are ways to teach them to become fashion stylists, and the most important fact is that any teaching process needs to be taught at children’s early age. As long as the learning is fun and exciting, children will dive deeper into it.

Now, let’s get to know the process of grooming your babies as fashion stylists for the fashion world.

Teach them about fashion

The first step is to make them acquainted with the topic of fashion. To do that what you can do is to introduce different relevant items starting from fashionable clothes, shoes, and accessories. What you buy for yourself, buy one for your baby. Tell them about the items and when to wear them. Thus you can teach them slowly about fashion.

Let them read a kid’s fashion magazine

If your children are school-going, a perfect chance is waiting for you. Show them kids’ magazines, fashion blogs, and how the child models are dressed, and show different websites and social media pages where you will find models to make fashion easier to understand for them to teach them about current fashion trends.

Inquire about their choice

Whenever your babies are shopping with you, ask them what they would like to buy. Make them confident in their opinion, and choices, and this way, they will quickly figure out their choices, develop a sense of style, and look for fashionable items which will look good on them.

Allow your child to explore different fashion items, express their opinion, and engage in conversation. Comment on any fashion practice they do, even if it is a style they are trying for the first time. Whenever you see any child dressed well, talk to your kids about that. This way they will be more comfortable in learning fashion.

Take them shopping

Let them explore the kids’ fashion item variations. This will open their eyes to the vast market and fashion trends. Teach them about clothes made of environment-friendly materials, custom-designed garments & accessories by fashion designers. When there are plenty of options, they will naturally be drawn to find the best-suited ones.

Admire their choice

Encourage them to pick clothing, and shoes of their choice when you are shopping or when they are going to a party. If you want them to wear something different, instead of making negative remarks, tell them that another set of clothing is more stylish to look at. After they have worn the clothing, praise them for how fine they look.

Mindfully talk about differences

Let your child understand & embrace diversity such as boys, girls, thin, lean, or healthy body figures, etc., which is critical in making them look good and build confidence. For example, my elder child is somewhat healthy, he knows, and I trained him to take it naturally. So, whenever he finds something for himself, he knows that he needs the larger-sized one.

Lead by example

This is my one piece of ‘must-follow’ advice. Show them before you tell them. What you want them to learn or adopt, do it by yourself. If you want your children to wear sunglasses, you should wear one. If you want them to be fashionable, demonstrate through your style.

Building a Fashionable Foundation

Building a Fashionable Foundation

There are some measures to follow to build a foundation for kid to grow up as a successful fashion stylist. Let’s check them out.

  • Grooming starts by developing interest. Make the term interesting to them by taking them to fashion exhibitions, events, and shows and letting them learn about different variations, styles, latest trends, etc.
  • Sometimes fashion institute offers formal education on this. Many institutes offer workshops, seminars, webinars, or online courses focusing on design, textiles, fashion history, and many fashion-related insights and hands-on experiences encouraging children to take this as a rewarding career.
  • If you can afford it, hire a mentor or professional to guide your children. Here is the idea, you don’t have to look for fashion industry experts. Look for university students or graduates who are majoring in fashion or design-related subjects. Thus you give them the chance to utilize their learned knowledge and allow your kids to learn directly.
  • Motivate your child to come up with their personal style, match outfits with different clothing, and encourage their output.
  • From time to time ask them, what’s trendy, how they know, or anything that they find interesting. So that they can stay knowledgeable in their own accord.
  • Support their choice for taking educational degrees, learning from industry professionals, and gain experience to develop a knowledge base.

Developing Personal styling

  • Allow your child to explore clothing variations, colors, fabrics, etc.
  • Learn about what’s trendy nowadays.
  • Inspire them to stick to style, and practice it.
  • When they express an opinion, support them. If it is something you can’t permit, don’t vehemently reject it, rather discuss it with them.
  • Appreciate their creativity whenever they are experimenting with something, be it a DIY fashion or making their own bracelets.
  • Take note of kids’ comfort, not disrupt a child’s inner tranquility.
  • Do not force them to be obsessed. Let them learn through as easy and natural process.
  • Let it be fun for them.

Basic Wardrobe Essentials

Basic Wardrobe Essentials

Now the question is what are the essentials that need to be placed in your child’s wardrobe? As you want your child to be prepared to be a fashion stylist, there are some considerations you need to look at deeply, as part of teaching them.

Planning

Have separate sections for their own clothes, shoes, and accessories that will be used only during special parties or festivals. Include some trendy and stylish clothes, and other clothes that your child prefers as well.

Clothing

  • Choose outfits for them of colors, patterns, and designs that accentuate them, not dim them. Include variations of clothing such as polo shirts, button-up shirts, t-shirts, tees of solid colors, and striped designs, for casual as well as formal wear. Also, have some undergarments such as briefs, socks, sleepwear pajamas, etc.
  • As for bottoms, jeans, gabardine pants, shorts, leggings, and skirts for girls. You can also include romper sets for full body coverage. As for girls, simple and plain yet soothing to wear a frock that has prints or solid colors.
  • Add seasonal clothes as well. Such as hoodies, jackets, and winter coats for winter; and crop-top, sleeveless for the summer season.
  • Watch video tutorials of a wardrobe stylist at times with your kids from social media accounts to encourage them.

Footwear & Accessory

  • As for footwear include sneakers, leather shoes, or casual sandals depending on activities. If your child is over 3 years old, you can let her wear some accessories such as headbands, bracelets, necklaces (for girls), hats, sunglasses, belts, etc.

Understanding Body Shapes and Colors

Understanding Body Shapes and Colors

When you are teaching your kids about this term, a common and essential factor is considering a child’s body, that is shape and skin tone. Teach it technically, so that the child’s perception of it doesn’t grow negative rather s/he understands the differences. For example, African children have dark skin, Americans are white in the majority, and Asians have mixed skin.

So, your target should be to teach them about it as naturally as possible. You may assign someone to teach your child, putting a positive note on basic fashion knowledge is the task of the parents themselves.

What can you teach them about body shapes?

  • Talk about different body shapes such as pear shape, hourglass shape, rectangle shape, etc.
  • Inform them about height differences among children.
  • Help them absorb information on a child’s health, they can be healthy, obese, thin less nutritious, etc.
  • Teach them about skin tone, also not to be judgmental of someone just because of their skin.
  • Teach them about color theory and patterns as well, as well as how colors affect displaying a body look. Some colors make the human body look fat and some are thin.

Networking in the Kid’s Fashion Community

Growing up as a stylist should be exciting and doesn’t add any burden. For that, one thing you can do is to widen your child’s network in the community. Connecting with the community helps build relationships, gain insights, and open doors to many opportunities. Here I have mentioned some ways to increase networking for the kids.

  • Attend fashion shows for kids, seminars, webinars, workshops, or fashion events. Your kids will meet many peers of like-mindedness.
  • Arrange kids’ fashion shows in your locality on special occasions or festivals.
  • Let your child collaborate on fashion-related programs if she gets the chance. Also, let your kids volunteer for a similar case. This will help them develop communication skills as well.
  • Stay connected to kids’ fashion-related social media pages for news on fashion merchandising to stay updated.
  • Follow fashion industry experts and sign up for their newsletters to broaden your ideas for discussing with the children.
  • Join similar online forums as well, allow them to meet peers and upgrade communications skills
  • Keep in touch with the new connections you made or met through different mediums.
